Questions over whether the surge in Afghanistan is working are rising again, as are insurgents in northern Afghanistan, just as a new report out by the Pentagon highlights some progress in the south. One of the larger questions: Is that progress in one region coming at the expense of progress in others?
President Obama made an unannounced visit to Afghanistan on Friday. The trip comes one year after ordering a surge of 30,000 additional troops into the fray; but also on the heels of the the deadliest year to date for U.S. forces in the region. In 2010 over 450 U.S. troops were killed, pushing the total number of forces killed to over 1,300. This has lead many to wonder: can we win the war in Afghanistan? And what does "win" mean in the current conflict?
Today, troops from the 101st Airborne Division's 4th Brigade Combat team will leave for Afghanistan from Fort Campbell in Kentucky. It's been a tough couple of months for the 101st. They've lost 41 troops in Afghanistan since March.
