All week long, we’ve been talking about the tenth anniversary of 9/11. We’ve spoken with young people, experts, soldiers, and you, our listeners. Today, we're focusing on the 9/11 commission, and what we've done to improve homeland security since the attacks.

All week long, in honor of the tenth anniversary of 9/11, we’re talking with and about young people came of age at the time of the September 11 attacks. Today we’re looking at how 9/11 factored into the choice two young people made to join the U.S. Army. Our guests are married couple Naveed Ali Shah and Angela Ali Shah. Naveed is a public affairs specialist in the U.S. Army who served in Iraq. Angela, who’s also in the U.S. Army, has served in the reserves for the past four years. Both Naveed and Angela were in middle school on the day of the 9/11 attacks.

For the 10th anniversary of 9/11, The Takeaway is speaking to people from all over the country about their own reflections on the terrorist attacks. For many, the events of September 11th altered their world. How did it change yours? 

This summer, city-backed plans to build an interfaith community center and mosque two blocks away from Ground Zero sparked an international debate.  Although there are nuances to the arguments, one side clearly feels that building a mosque near the site of the September 11th attacks is an affront to the victims; on the other hand, supporters say that there is no reason to block the plans, beyond simple “Islamophobia.”
