This past weekend, the Chicago Tribune launched the first installment in an ongoing series about the city’s public housing. Chicago is home to the largest redevelopment of public housing in the nation, and it’s being viewed as a model for other cities. Should it be? Thousands of families have been displaced by demolition or the shuttering of its projects. New housing plans are years behind schedule, with hundreds of millions of dollars already spent. Reporter Jason Grotto pitched the series and he joins us to answer the question: “What went wrong with Chicago's grand experiment?”

New Orleans' trailer crackdown

It’s been almost three years since Hurricane Katrina pounded New Orleans. Now the local government is taking a new measure to restore the city to its upright, pre-Katrina state. On July 1, 2008, the City of New Orleans started enforcing pre-Katrina zoning ordinances that prohibit people from living in trailers on private property. But this push toward normalcy could backfire if it pushes residents into homelessness. The Takeaway looks at both sides of this story with a New Orleans civil rights legal advocate and a city official.

An article in Atlantic Monthly magazine has kicked off a firestorm of controversy. Author Hanna Rosin ties the demolition of public housing projects to a rise in crime in the city of Memphis. Rosin’s critics say she uses circumstantial evidence to unfairly implicate former residents of public housing.
