Congress Reaches FAA Deal, Easing Pain on Thousands of Furloughed Workers

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced Thursday that Congress has struck a deal to fund the Federal Aviation Administration, ending a weeks-long partisan impasse that kept 4,000 FAA workers off the job, and tens of thousands out of work in airport construction. The Senate will ensure that a deal can be made before lawmakers leave for August vacation, and the bill will fund the agency through September 16.

Congress to Address 'Flash Crash,' Financial Reform

Congress will face public pressure this week as it tackles a series of hot-button issues. In the House, the Financial Services Committee has called for a hearing on the "flash crash" that took place last Thursday when the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell nearly 1,000 points in just 30 minutes. And Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is hoping to get the financial reform bill complete by the end of the week.

Handicapping Health Care Reform

The Senate's robust health care reform bill is in jepoardy after Massachusetts elected Republican Scott Brown to fill the Senate seat left vacant by the death of Senator Ted Kennedy. David Leonhardt, economics columnist for our partner The New York Times, says there are really only two scenarios left at this point — and they hinge on whether the House will decide to forgive what members percieve as mistreatment by their colleagues in the Senate, and pass the bill.

A report from the New York Attorney General’s Office says top-dog bankers are rolling in huge bonuses, and the House of Representatives is set to vote on a pay-reform bill today that aims to put a cap on some of those compensation packages. Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Barney Frank is leading the fight in the House and joins The Takeaway to talk about the bonuses.

Republicans are organizing opposition to a spending plan that many in their ranks call irresponsible.
