Novelist J.G. Ballard, famed for novels such as Crash and Empire of the Sun died over the weekend. His style was so distinctive that there's now an adjective, "ballardian" that describes his dystopian, bleak style. Patrik Henry Bass, a Takeaway contributor and literary editor at Essence Magazine, takes a look at Ballard and other writers who deserve their own adjectives.
Marjan Tehrani is an Iranian-American director/producer whose forthcoming documentary chronicles her brother Alex's wedding to Heather, an American woman from California. The couple traveled to Iran for the wedding and discovered that U.S. - Iranian relations aren't only political, but often very personal as well. Fifty years ago this week, virtuoso jazz pianist Thelonious Monk gave a landmark concert at New York City’s Town Hall. It was a coming-out for an underground jazz scene called bebop. Monk’s 1959 concert marked bebop’s shift from New York’s nightclubs to center stage. We celebrate the anniversary of that concert with WNYC music host, Terrance McKnight.
