Witness to History On JFK's Death

Wednesday, November 20, 2013

Reporter Hugh Aynesworth was on the scene that day in Dallas when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

Aynesworth says that the 50 years of conspiracy theories conjured by Kennedy's death have gotten it all wrong. His mission is to set the record straight with good, old fashion reporting.

He is author of “November 22, 1963: Witness to History,” and he joins The Takeaway to discuss his memories of that day in Dallas 50 years ago.

I was 10 years old at the time of President Kennedy's assassination. I had finally been given the honor or being a Crossing Guard at school for the week and part of my job was to raise the American Flag at school each morning with another Guard. I remember being pulled from the playground at recess so the two of us could lower the flag to half-mast. I also remember being in my living room and watching the funeral procession with my mother days later. Really made an impact in my 10 year old world!

My parents, Leonardo and Julia de la Canal were married on Nov. 22, 1963 in Mexico City. As the wedding ceremony ended and my now officially married parents left the Church a murmur started and instead of hearing the expected congratulations all that people were saying was "oiste....mataron a Kennedy!" / "did you hear....Kennedy was killed!"
This is a story that both my brother and I heard through out our lives and will remember forever.

22 Nov 63 Fort Worth TCU Homecoming: a young woman came out from the Student Union, telling us Kennedy had been shot. 5 June 68 Tai-Pei Tai-Wan Reading DEATH OF A PRESIDENT, I heard the Armed Forces radio announcer say, Robert Kennedy has been shot. 18 Feb 70 Udorn Thailand I friend told me, Jon’s been shot down. My husband was an Air America pilot killed flying in Laos on the Plain of Jars. Jon was shot in the head by a single sniper, the shot entering his throat and exiting the top of his head. I carried Jackie’s vision of her husband’s death with me for twenty years until a fellow Air America pilot told me Jon’s head wound was clean. His face peaceful.
