'A New Level of Secrecy and Control': Jill Abramson on the Obama White House

Thursday, April 10, 2014

In 2007, the Frontline documentary "News War" featured a series of interviews with Bill Keller, then the executive editor of Takeaway partner The New York Times. Frontline host Lowell Bergman asked Keller about freedom of the press under the Bush Administration.

"We have an administration that is more secretive and more hostile to the operations of the press probably than any since the Nixon administration," Keller replied.

As Bergman noted in the documentary, many prominent journalists and news organizations agreed with Keller. They may have even looked forward to the Obama years, hoping the new administration would have a change of heart.

Jill Abramson succeeded Keller as executive editor in July 2011, in the midst of the Obama era. She tells Takeaway host John Hockenberry that the White House's relationship with the press has only deteriorated.

"The Obama years are a benchmark for a new level of secrecy and control," says Abramson. "It's created quite a challenging atmosphere for The New York Times, and for some of the best reporters in my newsroom who cover national security issues in Washington."

Abramson says that the administration's criminal leak investigations have presented large obstacles to news coverage.

"There have been seven of them, and one of them right now threatens my colleague James Risen who has been subpoenaed in one of these cases," she says. "Collectively, they have really, I think, put a chill on reporting about national security issues in Washington."

Those that are covering national security, according to Abramson, say that is has never been more difficult to get information.

"Sources who want to come forward with important stories that they feel the public needs to know are just scared to death that they're going to be prosecuted," she says. "Reporters fear that they will find themselves subpoenaed in this atmosphere."

Abramson says that the Obama Administration uses legal loopholes to make things difficult for journalists and media organizations. She says, for example, that the Obama Justice Department pursues cases against reporters under an obscure provision of the 1917 Espionage Act.

"I think, in a back door way using an obscure provision of an old law, they are tip-toeing close to things that, here in the United States, we've never had," says Abramson.

In addition to shutting out reporters, Abramson says that photographers also have less access.

"Instead, [there's] a preference to have journalists rely on photography handouts from the White House," she says. "I'm not knocking the White House photographers—they're great—but you don't want one source for all information and all imagery about the president."

While Abramson says that the White House hasn't completely shut out the U.S. press corps, even routine media coverage has become difficult to obtain.

"The amount of friction and confrontation involved in just going about what I see as perfectly normal coverage, that in the past wouldn't have even provoked a discussion, becomes a protracted and somewhat exhausting process," she says.

This is nothing less than or short of what one would expect in North Korea or Cuba, both which are just somewhat differing degrees of DICTATORSHIP. To have a press be forced to rely upon State created images of the Dear Leader is CHILLING to contemplate in America!!

And we are all to familiar with the frequent clampdown on major news events being covered by the MSM, with as this article states, creates a dread and fear of prosecution if it presents Dear Leader or His minions in a negative light!

WHERE is the fearless press of bygone years??! What use are they, if they are only a TOOL for the Dear Leader?? They do more harm than good!!
The press had better start standing up to the DICTATOR and His minions like the PEOPLE did last week in Nevada, and the Regime's BLM filthy treasonous RATS!!

And if there are those reading here who think this was NOT an act of naked tyrannical unlawful aggression against the People, by people who have taken an OATH to PROTECT the People, and protect and defend their RIGHTS against Gov't overreach "So Help Me God", then you are one of the sheeple, and truly a useless eater, a TOOL and subject of the State.

Go and lick the boots of your Masters, and grovel in the dirt begging for their approval and a little loosening of their CHAINS. So stated our Founding Fathers! THEY knew this cannot be tolerated and yet remain FREE.

Day after day, week after week, year after year the NYT's have simply acted as megaphones for the Administration. They have not questioned, they have not investigated they have swallowed Jay Carney's transparent pap as fact. The press, and the NYT in particular have zero interest in uncovering scandal or even reporting the the known travesties. The press has become lapdogs not watchdogs. They live in a scandal rich environment and just can't seem to find any. There was a day when any reporter would have latched on to something like Harry Reid's involvemnt with the cattle land and chased it to ground. Now it's up to underfunded blogs and foreign newspapers to raise questions and reveal questionable dealings.

Conservatives are immediately labeled "racist" by the liberal media when they say the exact same thing as Bill Keller. Reporters can be harassed as long as they're a FOX reporter, and conservative groups can be exploited by the IRS. If the IRS had targeted liberal groups with a Republican President, the press would have been like pit bulls about it. The mainstream press has failed our democratic republic.

One (OK, way more than simply "one") can only hope that post-Obama (if we can reach it), there will some serious limits placed on how much damage a POTUS can do to our country. Consider the MANY millions of tax dollars squandered on personal entertainment by this regime - the same regime that claims to the the savior for the poor. Consider how many tons of CO2 have been unleashed solely for the Obamas' (including the pet dog) personal entertainment - from one the high priests of the "Church of Climatology". Consider all the blatant actions taken in spite of or perhaps to spite the Constitution, e.g. the whimsical morphing of the catastrophic "ACA" aka Obamacare, as well as many other transgressions. A banana republic is recognized by its Dear Leader's whims taking precendent over "the rule of law" - and how does the Obama USA compare to that standard? The Obama regime is the worst nightmare our country has ever faced and we may not survive it "as is", but I do believe there are plenty enough decent people in mid-America to recover from this mess albeit the country may well need to be split/re-organized into the "makers" and the "takers".

Then, the scene faded from color to black and white as the camera swung 180 degrees, stopping on a medium shot of a short man with black hair wearing a perfectly tailored Kuppenheimer suit. A lit Chesterfield smoldered in his right hand as he addressed the camera in deep sonorous tones that belied his lack of height:

"Submitted for your approval, an excursion into a bizarre alternate universe. Destination: a country that was once the proud home of a free press but is now presided over by a man whose delusional personality is matched only by his insatiable hunger for power and whose loyal media minions are waking up to reality in the middle of a love affair that includes frequent episodes of infidelity and abuse, a nation formerly called the United States of America but with each passing day becomes more and more a part of The Twilight Zone."

Did this woman press and press the Bush Administration about Cheney's secret meeting with Kenneth Lay and the energy barons which today, we do not have a complete list of those who attended the meeting. She runs to FOX News, like a typical coward, so that she will not be drilled with hard questions. Yet she has the nerve, the gall, to say that the Obama Administration avoids hard questions.
Why won't this woman go on the Chris Matthews Show, or the Ed Schultz show, or the Al Sharpton show? Why, because she is a coward, like all right wingers are.
Why doesn't she do a special series about Ronald Reagan, and how 135 members of his administration were indicted, or forced to resign for crimes or ethical violations. Why doesn't she doe a series of articles about how Ronald Reagan, a liar, fraud, and racist, illegally, and treasonously, sold weapons to the terrorist nation of Iran behind the backs of the American people, and constantly lied, lied, and lied about it?
Ronald Reagan, Nov. 6, 1986: "We have not, repeat, exchanged weapons for hostages nor shall we."
Ronald Reagan, Nov. 10, 1986: "Okay, we did exchange weapons for hostages, but I didn't know about it." (yeah right, all of the indictments against the Iran Contra crooks have Reagan right at the center of all the secret meetings).
Reagan committed treason, violating the 1) 1979 Congressional Arms Embargo against Iran and 2) The US Arms Export Munitions Control Act.
Yet, this woman has THE NERVE to accuse the Obama Administration of deception, and NOT A SHREWD of evidence has surface that any of her PHONY scandals have any merit, other than the fact that they are politically motivated PHONY scandals which are, IN NO WAY WHATSOEVER, connected to the Obama Administration.
Yes, lady, I will be civil, and I CHALLENGE YOU TO A DEBATE. And let's compare your so call claim that Obama's secrecy, etc., is more malicious that that of your right wing hero, Ronald Reagan (a pathological liar and deceiver) who got 243 Marines massacred in 1983 in Lebanon based upon another one of his LIES, then initiated a PHONY invasion of Grenada to cover up his stupid blunder in getting the 243 Marines killed.
By the way, his war in Grenada was a FAKE! Read the book, "Warriors of Disinformation" written by Alvin Synder, who WORKED in the Reagan Administration under Charles Wick, who headed the US Information Agency.
WOMAN, LET'S DEBATE!!!! I am NOT ONE OF THOSE PHONY LIBERALS THAT FOX NEWS PRESENTS!!!!

I see the "blame Bush" for everything is alive and well. Did that briefing tell Bush exactly where, when and how the planes would be used to attack us?
He had barely gotten into office but the plans were hatched and brought and setup under Clinton - right? So should we blame the Clinton Admin. for not realizing this was going on and not finding the illegal people who were training to fly those planes?

this broad is lying. She is a right winger that does shoddy work which is the reason CBS canned her. Her job, via instructions from the right wing, is to promote the phony scandals that the GOP has invented. WHERE WAS THIS WOMAN DURING THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION????
3000 Americans were killed on 911, after Bush received a clear August 6, 2001 Presidential Daily Briefing saying that Bin Laden was determined to attack the US using planes.
Where was this woman when Bush invaded Iraq, Now, we know, it was specifically for Oil Related purposes. Did she press and press the Bush Administration? Of course now. This lady is a right wing Shield and CBS did the right thing in ignoring her partisan lies. I bet she will delete my post. Right Wingers are cowards and cannot take the truth.

When the supposed "watch dogs of freedom" pulled their own teeth because they were all in awe of the opportunity to elect Americas first African American President. They mocked conservatives raising questions about his qualifications, experience and circles of influence in and around Chicago. Any other candidate would not have been so "Teflon coated" as the sycophant press allowed of him. Well, now it dawns on some that they have created more of a tyrant than an all healing post racial President they envisioned. America is more divided now than it was during the Viet Nam conflict, the civil rights battles of the South during JFK's and Johnsons administration and the various conflicts in the Middle East. I can see why Bush would be guarded with a hostile dominant media. This media always campaigned hard for his opponents. He didn't want to give them anything that they could misconstrue to use against him. The hostile press even compelled Bush to apologies for things, like the botched hurricane Katrina aftermath, that were frankly not much his fault. The Louisiana governor and New Orleans mayor were protected from their own incompetences. The public largely believed that it was all Bush's fault. Of course this gives glee to the Bush haters, but to truth oriented people, it made Bush's enemies look terribly dishonest.

On the other hand, Obama was put in office by the dominant media campaigning very hard for him. It was so bad that Obama could use the media to use the birther phenomena to attack the right while it is clear that Obama himself was the first birther, based on his own very public and very dishonest claims put in print years ago and still easily accessed. Obama's gaffs and foolishness have been glossed over or ignored. Obama was even caught spying on a friendly media. The dominant media loves Obama, but the respect is a one way street. Such is often the fate of useful idiots.

I appreciate the comment from Editor Abramson. Still I can't help but remain dubious. If the greater press is indeed confronting an opaque or somehow secretive regime then the press should loudly CRY FOUL on behalf of the people. Daily. Listening... Sigh.

Regarding the press media the scales forever fell from my eyes during Benghazi. IMO the damnable behavior of the press on Benghazi is that not a sound was heard from the press/media! I regard that an inexcusable absence of enquiry and catapults the lot into my top ten villains of Benghazi. Not Rice. Not Obama. Not the hidden multitudes. None of THEM owe me anything. They are all partisans and should offer up to me lies and misinformation to the extent the press/media will allow.

Poor Ms. Abramson. The NYT has spent almost 6 yrs running around like Barack Obama lapdogs, trying to make the most hard-left administration the nation has ever seen appear 'mainstream.' She allowed her reporters to be so uncurious about anything in Obama's background that anyone showing the slightest interest in uncovering unknown facts about his education and personal relationships was cast as a racist, or worse. Her reporters regularly listened to lie after lie about Obamacare, and were never curious about what the law really said. Now Ms. Abramson is upset at how closed this administration is? I'm sorry but she doesn't pass the laugh test.

Jill--your paper empowered Obama to seize more control over the media. He knew the lapdog media would say or do nothing against the first black president, who happened to be a D, who was fawned over and protected all during his first campaign. How about regaining some shred of professional dignity and do some honest, investigative reporting about Obama and his administrations' many scandals? ..... Crickets .....

Obama hid his life from public view, spends millions sealing personal records, his college transcripts, his medical records. Is it any big surprise Obama now conceals what he does as president? Where was he during Benghazi? It's all a secret. His IRS, Holder, and Fast & Furious prosecutor take the 5th or invoke Executive privilege, it's all part of the Secret Government. It's as if the mere citizens, the peasants have no right to ask about their king.

When Romney didn't disclose some of his tax returns Obama supporters, Harry Reid and columnists concluded he must have something to hide. Anyone not being transparent was hiding criminal activity. But Obama gets to hide far more and most ignore the secrecy more similar to how the Mafia operates. Obama's Chicago connections are from organized crime, Tony Rezko, landlord con artists bilking the federal government, Gov. Blago. Obama's associates are in prison. Obama would be too, if he wasn't so secretive. Obama refuses to disclose because disclosures might and would tend to incriminate him and send him to prison for life.

"...perfectly normal coverage, that in the past wouldn't have even provoked a discussion, becomes a protracted and somewhat exhausting process," she says."

That's the point, m'am. Because shut up.

Please note also that 2007 and before were some of the most difficult years we had faced as a country. We were still responding to a horrendous attack on America. The US was involved in active war (2007 was when we kicked in the surge in Iraq -- remember -- real war -- real troop movements -- real secrets.)

This administration is specializing in secret keeping and unwarranted unnecessary domestic spying ("Need someone's IRS info so we can send in the FBI, ATF, EPA et. al. Got it right here. Shhh.")

So actually my heart does not bleed for the New York Times as it has been one of the biggest defenders of the domestic abuse and junior high posturing and bullying of this administration.

So pound sand. And when you want to do something about it, start reporting on Benghazi, Fast and Furious, EPA abuses, the IRS horror, the corrupt DOJ administration, the protected classes, the Obama stoked race and class warfare, the fraudulent numbers in Obamacare. Just as a start.

For the New York Times or it's journalist to state that the white house has become secretive is admitting failure on their part. Since 2007 many like myself had serious concerns with the credibility of Barack Obama. The New York Times was first among the media preaching the wonders and greatness of Obama and yet nothing to back it up with. The Times has proudly shown their inability to practice real journalism and perused going after media outlets that were exposing Obama for what he really is. The New York Times is just realizing when you lie and mislead the public its nearly impossible to regain their credibility amongst the public. The Times has willing lowered the standards of journalism and the Gray Lady is nothing more than tabloid trash with little credibility.

I'm going to do something I've never done before, and defend the Administration on this. Yes, they have been secretive-- improperly so, and yes, they have absolutely disregarded (and actively undermined) the role of the press in a free society. However, there is a certain irony in hearing this complaint from the NYTimes, which actively slanted its news to ensure Obama's election. Basically, the media abandoned its own role, and actively signed on as members of the Obama campaign. Having done so, it is they-- not the Administration-- who have undermined the role of a free press. The Administration did no more than treat them in precisely the way they chose to be treated.

I remember Sam Donaldson always being tough on Reagan and Sam said his questions were not submitted prior.

If you liberals think it will just go back to normal after the Exulted One leaves office you are bigger fools than you are currently given credit for.

Note: Do not look for the unbiased and impartial PBS Frontline series to do any updated reporting on current press restrictions in the White House.

In reading over the comments here, I am struck by the ugly tone. Most of the text is insulting, derogatory and sophomoric. You are not engaging in discourse. You are simply spewing bile intended to hurt, demean and dismiss those who disagree with you. You do yourself no service. I find it sad that most can't string together large words to form a valid argument. I suppose its a perfect comment on the liberal education, immersion and brainwashing that now dominates U.S. education policy and has eclipsed real learning.

Oh be quiet Jill! You made your bed by covering for the guy so now you can sleep in it! No sympathy for you!

Is she joking? The White House didn't even *allow* the press to speak to GWB and Reagan without a script. Under Bush, the press had to submit all questions in writing before press conferences.

Bush started an entire war under false pretenses and the press licked his hand. Reagan Reagan sold weapons to Iran to illegally finance a secret army in central America.

"Fair fight openness?" What?

I am not happy with Obama for many reasons, but after after hearing her comments, I smell something bovine.

I can't imagine having to listen to Ms Abramson's irritating, droning voice for any length of time. What a nightmare. Why do print journalists not listen to themselves speak for even a few moments before accepting invitations to appear in broadcast venues?

I'm disappointed that Obama has such an open door policy of hiding secrets.
