Many companies check the credit history of potential employees, but it's a practice that U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren wants to stop. The Massachusetts Democrat recently introduced a bill with six other senators that would prohibit employers from requiring job applicants to disclose their credit history. Warren argues that an individual's credit rating does not accurately reflect his or her potential to do a good job and often discriminates against women, seniors, students and minorities.
"A bad credit rating is far more often the result of unexpected medical costs, unemployment, economic downturns, or other bad breaks than it is a reflection on an individual's character or abilities," Warren says.
“This [bill] is really about one more way to give people who are struggling a chance to get back in the game,” Warren tells The Takeaway.
As for her reflections after almost a year in office, Warren sounds hopeful. “For all the things that are broken around here, the truth is there are a lot of tools in the tool box to make change,” she says.
