For Halloween Costumes, How Sexy is Too Sexy for Tweens and Teens?

Friday, October 15, 2010

This year's best selling Halloween costumes for the ladies have a common theme. Whether it's Lady Gaga or Jersey Shore's Snooki, popular costumes involve young, provocative women.

Sondra Santos Drahos says Halloween has become a holiday for adults and very young children, while teens and tweens are left stuck in the middle, unsure whose lead to follow. Halloween, she says, might be a time to have a larger discussion about our sexualized American culture and why women feel the need to dress suggestively at all.

In the regular world, Halloween is
when children dress up in costumes

and beg for candy.

In Girl World, Halloween
is the one night a year

when a girl can dress
like a total slut

and no other girls can
say anything about it.

The hard-core girls just wear lingerie

and some form of animal ears.

I remember feeling bad for the kids that had store bought costumes when I was in school.

Make your own costumes for heavens sake! Check out the action at the Thrift Stores these days. It's like a pre-halloween party with everyone laughing while they create an alternate image with plenty of props to choose from. Much much much more fun than shopping for someone else's Expensive and Tasteless design.
