Talking veterans out of suicide

Monday, April 21, 2008

Veterans groups are suing the Department of Veterans Affairs over how it treats returning soldiers at risk of suicide. They are charging a "systemwide breakdown" in the way that traumatized soldiers have been treated.
The VA set up a hotline eight months ago to reduce suicide numbers. Since then, it has received 37,200 calls from potential suicides and made 720 "rescues." Hotline number: 1-800-273-TALK (8255) Guest: Patricia Cohen, Reporter, The New York Times
