A Rogue Sheriff Roams in Arizona

Friday, October 16, 2009

Earlier this month, the sheriff for Arizona's Maricopa County, Joe Arpaio, was stripped of his powers to enforce immigration rules by a change in federal law. But the feisty sheriff has said that won't stop him, and apparently it hasn't. He announced that he will be conducting an anti-immigration sweep disguised as "crime suppression" in Maricopa County today. He will face protests, though, as he does it. Valeria Fernandez, an independent journalist from Phoenix, Ariz., joins us with the story. (Read Fernandez' piece on the Feet In 2 Worlds blog.)

Here's Sheriff Arpaio on "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer" explaining that despite losing his federal enforcement authority, he still plans on "locking 'em all up."

I support Joe , this state is full of illegals who think they can do whatever they want in AZ or the entire USA . No auto insurance , no respect for the Law , they sneak in our country and abuse our laws and our system .
I was a quest in the jail and 90% of the prisoners liked living off the tax payers , black , white , Mexican , I didmatter . 3 meals and a cot They would spit and curse out the officers "C.O.'S . No respect .Do the crime do the time with some sort of self respect . I did my time and moved on , God bless Joe for standing up to the Feds . And making Jail unpleasant for anyone who brakes the law .

Finally, from all the sources I trust (you really, REALLY cannot at all trust a single word that CNN or fox or msnbc or any of that garbage tells you, it's most likely entirely BS), Joe Arpaio is just a Bad Dude, straight up. One of the most tenured law enforcement officers in the USA, sure, just because he's kept himself there with corruption and evil for the last X years.

Now you all have a fine evenin' and don't forget to get your passports before it's too late.

The drug thing: never gonna get fixed. If you're 35 miles from the Mexican border you won't ever be able to stop drug trafficking. You probably won't even be able to slow it down, but you might think you have at some point! Sorry for the tough news, southern law enforcement, but Americans Love Drugs and will never stop paying enough to make it worth the cartels' time. Also, all these numbers and statistics are making my head hurt. Don't forget that anyone with a modicum of talent can take several totally meaningless numbers, attach a few vague (or just not accurate) labels, and present these "statistics" as viable facts to prove virtually any side of any point they please, no matter the true meaning or original intent of the numbers.

Who said I was trying to argue? :) If you can tell me what I'm arguing for then You'll Be the First To Know! No, I don't have an agenda, I just like reading and breaking down the things that people like to hear themselves say. Plus, it could never been an argument, all your comments came after mine :) I was out of town for the weekend living life and thought I'd see if anybody was still here. And please, forgive me for trying to lighten up with a little minor comic relief about an individual who in no way deserves any respect as anything more than a fellow human being. Maybe you should try lightening up sometime, too, Chet! (Does it feel more effective to use my fake internet name in your rebuttals?) And he really does look like a bulldog in the right light, how you could possibly not think that's at least a little amusing. And really, you think he or anybody really cares what he looks like? Thank you, though, for entertaining the living bejeebers out of me tonight!

Those first two things are very sobering, but don't act like only illegals can hit and run or that only an alien can murder. The job thing becomes more of a realization of a fundamental flaw. If there are people willing to work for $2/hr and they can support themselves on it, why is there a minimum wage at all? That, of course, is a whole other set of interesting economic phenomenon, however. I surely don't contest the legal and reasonable tracking of who comes into the USA, but as for "Sheriff Joe" doing "right..." well, the man is a blight of integrity across the whole of USA law and politics, so his means are irrelevant to his ultimately immoral ends.

Oct. 19 2009 12:50 AM

(cont'd)...The cross-section I always knew was actually quite proportionate to "legal" US citizens, although that wasn't even near Texas, where it sounds by your account and emotional demeanor as though a rampant crime family is burning the countryside and leaving none alive as they pillage the ruins of Houston for gold jewelery and scrap metal. (that last little part about burning and looting was a joke) So, talking points, BAM: 1) dont tell me what *I* think or what *I* want, don't you think I already know that, you silly goose? :) 2) the 2010 elections will serve as nothing more but yet another meaningless farce designed to make people such as yourself believe they have some kind of control in this country, ala the most negligible, almost nonexistent effect on the country's reality while offering you emotional sustenance and well-being because, after all, you voted (and/r lobbied, or activated, or spoke up, or went to one of those atrocious town meeting messes).

Oct. 19 2009 12:40 AM

This goes into the second line up there, right before the sarcasm note: "Now, please continue to tell me *what I said*. Could you please explain my argument to me and tell me why I think we should ignore any crime?" My point there is: please do not put words in my mouth. Further, if "speeders want them to ignore speeding" and "pot sellers" the same with "selling," then are your next two lines calling me an illegal immigrant and you Joe Arpaio? If so, excellent construction, my man, funny stuff! Seriously though, I've known just a few illegal mexican migrant workers in my time. Most of them were hard workers, some of them seemed like quality people, some of them broke petty laws and one was a real criminal... (con't)

Oct. 19 2009 12:39 AM

So, really, you can relax, I'm not trying to make you mad, you're doing that to yourself. (note the sarcasm within the : it offends some people to put words in their mouths like that) Could you, while you're busy with that, please explain how illegally migrated (I couldn't really care any less about specific, esoteric, legal semantics. you know what I mean) drunk drivers are responsible for 25% of the crime in houston right now? That sounds just a little bit absolutely ridiculous to me. Hey, though, I've never ever been to Texas and everybody tells me I don't need to go so I'll have to take your word for it.

Oct. 19 2009 12:35 AM

Terribly sorry for your apparent misfortune, Chet. Do you think that the people who robbed you committed those crimes because they are "illegal immigrants" (and there was no incorrect spelling at that point in the paragraph, if you're going to try and be clever at least use the correct editing) or because they are "bad people?" And where do you draw the line on judging every single person who shares one thing in common: they don't care about some ****ed-up country's imaginary border or BS law system but need to support their families? Furthermore, you didn't mention the "illegals" using your bed or bathroom or money or food, as I spoke about. The focus of my reply was "MikeS"'s seemingly and hyperbolistic (is that even a word?) response. And finally, I think your other problem may be that you live in Texas, which is, by every account I've heard, a terrible place to live.

Oct. 19 2009 12:05 AM

Sheriff Joe Arpaio is a hero. I hope he stands his ground, and I hope all REAL Americans stand with him. These are indeed sad and bizarre times when our own government has become the biggest threat to our freedom, liberty, and sovereignty. Someone above said there will be another civil war. It may indeed happen, and if it does, I will laugh when the Communists infesting Washington DC are dragged kicking and screaming before Patriot Tribunals to be charged with treason.

Oct. 18 2009 09:18 PM

Sherrif Joe is a God sent hero to the American people! The John Wayne of our era. God speed Joe, Damn the torpedos full speed ahead and screw the commies and socialists! Get jobs you lowlife scum!

Oct. 18 2009 07:35 PM

Have one of these illegals hit and run you after a traffic accident. Kill one of your family members during a drug deal. Or take a job away from you because they will work for a few cents on the dollar and then maybe you will know that Sheriff Joe is doing the right thing. And that is only scratching the surface of the illegal problem the Country faces. I welcome legal immigration, you have to sign up to be here. It is the only way it works.

Tootsie's Mom

Make no mistake about it, the first American Civil War was fought over states' rights. The second American Civil War (make no mistake about it, it is coming) will be fought over the same issue. But this time, the states will win.

Oct. 18 2009 05:52 PM

Well put 1776 Again, and with their resistance to enforcing the border, the Obama administration also wants to loosen voter registration rules to garner illegal democrat votes, just as his alleged homeland security chief tried to do when she was our govenor.

Oct. 18 2009 12:48 PM

Oct. 18 2009 12:14 AM

Joe for president! No one else has the guts to get us out the stinging mess Obama is causing.

Oct. 17 2009 10:08 PM

Congrats Chris: You lost the argument and so now you have to address the man's physical appearance...

Oct. 17 2009 08:39 PM

Chris: You asked when was the "LAST" time an illegal immigrant [sic] ALIEN "...snuck into your house...".
LET'S LIST THE CRIMES I've been victim of:
1) CAR VANDALIZED - Corpus Christi, Texas - Perpetrator: Illegal Alien
2) TRUCK BREAK-IN: Took back-back containing a pistol & credit cards - Perpetrator ? Illegal alien caught in Kaufman County, Texas after using credit card on camera
3) HOME BREAK-In: Corpus Christi, Texas - stolen: Takamine guitar, Fender guitar, television & Video player, 22 rifle - Perpetrator ? Illegal alien caught thru pawn shop investigation.
WE'RE SICK OF IT.... AND WE'RE GONNA' CHANGE IT.... Watch & see in 2010....

Oct. 17 2009 08:37 PM

Your argument is HOLLOW... You cite the occurrence of OTHER CRIMES as a REASON to ignore THIS CRIME ( illegal aliens committing FELONIES ).
SPEEDERS want the cops to ignore speeding
POT SELLERS want the cops to ignore selling
YOU want 'em to ignore illegal entry
In Houston alone, there would be 27% LESS crime TONIGHT if there were NO ILLEGALS driving drunk.
Finally, Chris.... they are Illegal ALIENS, NOT illegal "immigrants". The word Immigration implies a LEGAL MIGRATION. We will see what happens with this after the 2010 elections -

Oct. 17 2009 08:26 PM

That is a totaly ignorent comment to make, being in the UK you have a good track record of how to screw things up don't you? Your immigration is a joke. We chose not to be like you about 250 years ago.
[[Comment edited. Disagreement is fine; be respectful of the speaker. -Eds.]]

Oct. 17 2009 06:28 PM

You Sir are 100% correct.

Oct. 17 2009 06:22 PM

obama zero. Here we have a man who is swarn to uphold the law and he does it. HE SHOULD ARREST obama if he travels there. janet neoploitian is a third rate hack who will do what ever she is told. States rights forever.
Give these DC putzes a hold on you and they are like a CANCER.
Check out the bios on obamas czars! It will tell you who obama is all about.

Oct. 17 2009 06:21 PM

Why do we have to put up with this?
Why do I have to pay for their crime?
All of the resources spent because of their presence.

Subjects, Illegal Immigration and Crime, statistics, public safety, local enforcement, Judicial Watch, Maricopa County, AZ, Arizona

33.5% of those sentenced for manufacture, sale or transport of drugs.
35.8% of those sentenced for kidnapping.
20.3% of those sentenced for felony DUI.
16.5% of those sentenced for violent crimes.
18.5% of those sentenced for property crimes.
44% of those sentenced for forgery and fraud.
85.3% of those convicted of criminal impersonation or false ID.
96% of those convicted of human smuggling.

Oct. 17 2009 02:59 PM

By "putrid excuse for a human being", I assume you mean [[Comment edited. Disagreement is fine; no personal attacks. -Eds]] Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano who is PURPOSELY allowing the USA to be invaded by Mexico in order to destroy the White majority and keep her Communist ("Democrat") party in power forever?

Oct. 17 2009 02:28 PM

"They are.." So you admit that it's not the illegal immigrants causing the problems, but the criminals. Keep in mind that correspondence does not equal causality. When the police pour "25%" more resources into one specific category, it's bound to have some effect. Hospitals, legal systems, and police forces are full with CRIMINALS, a number of whom happen to be illegal immigrants. News flash: the Cartels that you complain about view humans as numbers and will NEVER stop recruiting bad people to be their criminal henchmen in the US. OF COURSE the government wants AZ to teach English, the state is right next to the border! Come on, it's definitely not the illegal immigrants' faults that our government is utterly, completely, and flawlessly incompetent. And while I haven't spent too much time in AZ, only a few months, I can tell you there are a LOT of other things going on there with regards to politics and law that are MUCH more wasteful than illegal immigrants.

Oct. 17 2009 02:10 PM

We in Arizona are tired of illegal aliens depleting our state resources. Our hospitals are going broke, our court system can't handle the numbers, our police resources are depleted, our jails and prisons are full with illegal aliens. Our schools are overflowing.
Last year Arizona was forced by the federal Gov. to spend $51 million dollars for "English as a Second Language" Program. They are taking away from American education.
Our insurance rates are high because of auto theft. Drug trafficking is rampant.
Drug cartels are murdering and kidnapping people all of the time.
They are turning once nice neighborhoods into crime ridden shyt holes.

Oct. 17 2009 01:58 PM

People don't know nearly as much about illegal immigration as they think they do. People seem to think illegal immigrants take ALL of social security, healthcare and other various benefits. The fact is that the low percentage of illegals in America (<5% of the populous) don't stress the system NEARLY as hard as the people it was designed to control- the USA middle class, which is now sinking farther and farther into tyrannical government control. There is so much fraud, lying, cheating and lobbying throughout the USA government's economy that we have absolutely no place worrying about what most of these illegals are doing.

Oct. 17 2009 01:43 PM

Well, that's not a very nice thing to say about your family... you're comparing them to one of the cruellest, most unethical, evil, corrupt, out-of-touch individuals in recent American history. If you really knew what Arpaio's MO was, you would never be so crude as to compare your family to him. Plus, when was the last time an illegal immigrant snuck "into your house and use your money, your bathroom, and bed, and eat all your food too.."?? Huh? When did that happen? What a ludicrous, offensive argument. Dude, they don't want your food and money any more than an American-born citizen does. You appear to horribly prejudiced against other cultures and anyone else not born here. What the hell makes you so special anyways? OOH, you were born inside an imaginary, invisible, nearly meaningless line. ME TOO, LETS BE FRIENDS!

Oct. 17 2009 01:34 PM

"what made America great, the rule of Law."

That's the kind of thinking that drives America and its citizens into further hateful and destructive chemicals. Eat the drugs they give you, read their lawbooks, ascribe to their morals, and they basically have you, sir, sucking at the teat of their sick and twisted diety, siphoning off all our blood and hard work to play what amounts to a massively amusing game to some unelected, unseen official near the top of the food chain. The "Rule of Law" has become a small, .5%-2% minority of out-of-touch, slow-headed people to decide what is not only safe, but good and best for everyone else. When you consider just how these people have unique power and insight, you start to see how dangerous it is to blindly worship and follow their "Rule of Law."

Oct. 17 2009 01:29 PM

Hey-there are 11 million illegal immigrants in this country. WHO CARES? Leave 'em alone. The job thing is irrelevant, unless YOU want to work for $4.32/hour. Further, the "Rule of Law" didn't make this country a thing but screwed up and totally backwards, rewarding overconsumerism and cynicism. The collective efforts of brilliant, kind, loving people are what made this country great (if the USA could even be considered great anymore; we no longer lead the world in ANYTHING). Not to mention that Joe Arpaio is one of the most corrupt figures in all of policital and legal history. The man eats illegal kickbacks for breakfast, people. Why else do his jowls droop like that?

Oct. 17 2009 01:25 PM

"This putrid excuse for a human being is representative of what America has become. How sad and scary!"...I guess that means I can sneak into your house and use your money, your bathroom, and bed, and eat all your food too.. your OK with that. How nice, the whole family is on the way MK!!

Oct. 17 2009 01:24 PM
1776 Again

What we have here is NOT a rogue sheriff, rather a rogue federal government full of despicable communist traitors that ALSO belong in prison.

Oct. 17 2009 12:56 PM

Arizona is the kidnapping capital of the world second to Brazil. There were 365 kidnappings last year in Phoenix. All, according to Phoenix Police committed by illegal aliens and mexican drug gangs and human smugglers. 40,000 autos were stolen last year. By guess who? Since there has been a crack down on illegal aliens in Arizona, crime has dropped 25%. Auto theft went down by 10,000 vehicles.
60% of Phoenix Police resources goes to investigating or dealing with illegal alien crime.
I could go on and on and on.

Oct. 17 2009 11:45 AM

Sheriff Joe Arpaio represents what made America great, the rule of Law. These people are in the United States illegally; they do not have the same rights as native born or legal immigrants. For the legal residents who are inconvenienced by being stopped, it is an irritation, but the illegals must go, and here is one man who is doing the right thing. The Federal government does not have the right to interfere in the work of an elected official who is upholding the law of his State according to the Constitution of the United States.

Oct. 17 2009 11:33 AM

Go,go,Sheriff Joe! Keep protecting our country from lawbreakers!

Oct. 17 2009 11:18 AM

I wish all sheriffs in the U.S. had the courage and conviction for upholding the law as this sheriff. It is a sad time in our nation when the Feds and others rebuke Joe Arpaio for enforcing the law.

Oct. 17 2009 11:00 AM

Rogue my aunt's petutie! I welcome people of all shapes, sizes, ethnic background, color, etc, etc, etc, to this wonderful country. But they need to come in the front door. Those that don't, violate our laws, tax our schools and health systems, and the Sheriff's actions are according to law. There are 45 million Americans (of all ethnic groups) out of work and somehow we are supposed to be the world's employment office? Bull, we need to wake up and take care of our own house, our own neighbors, and stop this illegal immigration travesty!

Oct. 17 2009 10:27 AM
MK Ultra

This putrid excuse for a human being is representative of what America has become. How sad and scary!
