You may be surprised to learn that in 2011, 12 percent of all converts to Islam in the United States were Latino. That's double the rate of a decade ago. Brooke Binkowski is a freelance reporter at the Fronteras Desk.

I think is very positive. A mere conversion, nevertheless, without a furthering self-evaluatory period of the converted's (male or female) spiritual commitment or what we call in regular Protestant-Christian Faith the testifying process followed by the confirmation over a period of meditation which leads to the sustainability of the chosen spiritual path is just a "conversion." Time is always the best witness to this human spiritual development transformations. I wished them the best. Let us clean the fetid air of hate and ignorance. I am involved in interfaith work in New york City and I welcome any conversion of my Latino brothers and sisters to any faith which mission is to uphold the love peace and compassion among all my universal human brothers and sisters. God Bless You all. Asalamalecum.

Sounded like prison conversions - nothing new. Jailhouse conversion to Islam has been going on for decades.

Larry: I wish I'd gotten into that, but I'm not at my sharpest at 6am, unfortunately.

What I was told by an religious studies professor was that many people who are raised Catholic are seeing what they consider a degradation of the family values they'd thought were espoused in Catholicism, what with the recent high-profile molestation (and other) scandals, Vatican II, et cetera, and are looking for a new religion with a similar sense of community and structure, which is provided by Islam. Interest in Islam has been growing steadily throughout North America, both within and without Latino communities, for several years.

I was totally surprised that Mexicans who treat Catholicism very seriously would turn to Islam. I'm actually scratching my head.
