Family Secrets: A Takeaway Listener's Story

Wednesday, May 09, 2012

Last week, we talked with Madeleine Albright about her life, and her discovery in adulthood that she was Jewish. We asked our listeners: have you ever discovered a secret about your family or identity? We received a lot of responses, including one from Loren Levinson. She was adopted when she was a baby and raised her whole life in a Jewish household. But when she tracked down her birth parents as an adult, she discovered that her paternal ancestry was Muslim and that her birth mother is a born-again Christian.

The quality of reporting has gone down on this program drastically. The inaccuracy Lisa Louis pointed out was only one example of an entirely incompetent interview. Another appalling example is when the host called Loren a "polyglot." Look up your terms! Polyglot means someone who speaks a many languages, not someone related to many cultures. Or, a statement that NOW Lisa knows why she tans easily -- of course, she's a Pakistani descent. Look, I'm an Ashkenazi Jew from Ukraine, and I tan instantly. The program was full of stereotypical comments and inaccuracies. I have been getting increasingly disappointed with the show, this piece was really as bad as it gets.

Just a nitpick/correction: Loren Levinson clearly stated early in the segment that she grew up in an observant - close to "Conservadox" - household. Yet when the host was summing up as the interveiw ended, he said she was raised in "a secular Jewish" family. Please note that these two types of designations DO NOT mean the same thing. If he did not know what Ms. Levinson meant by the term "Conservadox", he could of asked. I was a bit surprised by such a sloppy mistake by such professional radio folks. Please listen to what the interviewee SAYS before incorrectly summing up.
