Few places have come to symbolize climate change as much as the island nation of the Maldives. The nation's 1,200 small islands in the Indian Ocean sit, on average, about five feet above sea level. When Mohamed Nasheed became the first democratically elected president of the country in 2008, he made climate change his primary policy concern.

Filmmaker Jon Shenk followed the president during his first year in office in his film "The Island President". The film culminates in the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Summit — but much has happened since then. President Nasheed resigned from office in what he has since called a coup, and the future of the country is again in political and environmental disarray.

The Island liar. On European media, we are going to sink but in Maldives, we are going to make bridges between islands to islands. On Indian media, we have 100s of terrorist but in Maldives, we are Sunni Muslims. On State media, we have lot of investors but in Islands, he and his supporters are torching public property. Are you truly helping Maldives verify his lies for last three years?

He advocated democracy before he became president. As the president he practiced a dictatorship. The western world seems to have heard only one side of the story.

Well said President Nasheed. The man himself is the only hope for Maldivians to move towards democracy and justice as well as safeguarding the safety of the nation itself. There is no lie in what he has said and what he has achieved for us Maldivians. Throughout his tenure, and even now, President Nasheed strives to give the best to his country and people. As a Maldivian I am very proud of what he has done for us!

Thats how they staged the coup . They always say he is not Islamic and helping the jews. But what we saw was a mutiny of police officers and a few military men, taking sides with the rich and former dictators who has been struggling to defame mr nasheed. The whole thing was live on tv, religouse fanatic sheiks saw angels coming down that day according to them.
What we are seeing now is a complete takeover of the government by the police and SO. Women beaten abused men beaten abused , NGO's keeping silent HRCM of te maldives members on leave , police being praised an given medals, gangs coming out at night and siding with police to crush the mdp activists labelling them as jews. Its a islamic country but the sheiks tryig to portray this as a civil war against non muslims in the country. Even the current foreign minister daughter of the despot gayyoom warned that it would lead to a civil war. Bur what we exeperience in the maldives is that the old guards are back with a vengence.
