Why Cushing, Oklahoma Matters

Thursday, March 22, 2012

Yesterday, President Obama kicked off a two-day tour to highlight his administration’s energy strategy. His stops include Nevada, New Mexico, and Ohio, as well as a small city in Oklahoma called Cushing.

If you aren’t from Oklahoma, you might not know about Cushing, or why it factors into the president’s energy plans.

Ben Allen, a reporter from affiliate station KOSU in Oklahoma City, is here to explain. Carol O’Dell is a Takeaway listener in Oklahoma City who until recently owned a ranch just outside Cushing.

"Yesterday, President Obama kicked off a two-day tour to highlight his administration’s energy strategy."

Translation: Yesterday, President Obama kicked off a two-day tour as part of his '12 reelection campaign. The President's tour coincides with a lull in campaign news following the Illinois primary, giving him control of the news cycle. Unlike Mitt Romney's campaigning in the same time period, the Obama tour is being conducted at taxpayer expense, saving valuable resources for an Obama campaign funding effort that is lagging expectations.
