French Satirical Magazine Attacked

Wednesday, November 02, 2011

The office of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo was firebomed early Wednesday, apparently in retaliation for publishing an issue "guest edited" by the Prophet Muhammad. The magazine, known for its irreverence and skewering of all cultural institutions, had published a special edition earlier in the day to "honor" the victory of the Islamist Ennahda party in Tunisian elections under the name "Charia Hebdo," a reference to Sharia Law. Hugh Schofield, correspondent for the BBC, reports on the latest.

I didn't even bat an eye to the devil's advocate "have it coming" question. Though the phrasing was shocking to many it brought up the fact that yet another European publication was being attacked for doing what's in their rights to do. I think John was really asking, "What are you going to do about these attacks?"

Miami during the early 70s had car bombs and similar attacks performed by Cuban refugees who were enraged by what they'd hear or read in the media. If Hockenberry's question been asked back then instead of outrage it would've prompted the government to correct the situation.

During yesterday's report on the firebombing of the French satirical newpaper Charlie Hebdo by an Islamic terror group, I was appalled to hear John Hockenberry's ask Hugh Schofield "Didn't they have this coming?"

It angers me that a journalist for , which holds owes its existence to people and corporations who believe in and support freedom of the press, would even give lipservice to the idea that a cartoon offending Muslim sensibilities somehow warrants firebombing.
I wonder, if Mr. Hockenberry were reporting on a rape victim who had been wearing a short skirt and halter top, would he also ask "Didn't she have this coming?"

To John - What a horrible thing you said when you said that Charlie Hebedo was "asking for it." Since when do satirists ask for firebombs in response to making fun of a religion? Your statements and attitudes are beyond the pale of acceptible comment. I am done with you and your despicable attitude.
