Rep. John Mica on the Politics Behind the FAA Shutdown

Partisan fighting over the debt ceiling on Capitol Hill has affected more than just the markets. Over the weekend, Congress failed to pass a funding extension for the Federal Aviation Administration, following a disagreement over cuts in subsidies. As a result, the U.S. government was forced to suspend collection of federal airline taxes, at a loss of approximately $200 million per week. The F.A.A had to furlough 4,000 employees, and airport modernization projects worth billions of dollars are now on hold.

Congressman John Mica is a Republican representative from Florida’s seventh district. He says the Democrats are to blame for the F.A.A shutdown.

My sources say that Delta Airlines is a heavy contributor to the Mica campaign. Delta is not interested in their shops becoming unionized. Therefore, Mica was ordered to pull the string on the reauthorization bill. Language was crafted to read a no vote for the union was the same as an undecided. This would give Delta an up vote and the union a down vote.

So doesn't the loss of of $200 million a week in taxes exceed the cost of rural airport subsidies. And, since when do Union rules or formations become a Cograssional issue and certainly not part of the the spend plan for the FAA reauthorization. This childish petty "I want my way or else" attitude is why both parties are failing our country but Republicans are shining brightly as the most destructive. We live in America not a Communist country where we have to live by "PARTY" rules as they do say in China. Stop interjecting personal beliefs into what is good for the country. You are now going to have to raise taxes just to recoup the lost tax revenue (potentially over a $billion by 7 SEP and a lot more if we have the same bipartison negotiations). Of course deep defense spending cuts would pay for the added debt to the deficit which supposedly you are trying to lower but just raised by .1 $trillion.

Cong. Mica is beholden to the monied interests who contribute to his campaigns, so he does what they want. Thus, 4000 people and those who rely on them are out of work. Cong. Mica needs to get to work and get this bill passed.

Mica clearly had his agenda but I'd like The Takeaway to dig deeper into this story about the airport subsidies because herein lies the problem that underlies so many of the fiscal and political problems our country is facing. The federal government gives select airports subsidies of $300, $1,000, $2,000 per passenger? What? The Takeaway should be all over this. What airports are selected? Why? And most importantly, where is the money going? I think you'll find that airports are selected based on political deals for politicians who owe favors to local businesses and contractors who are probably the beneficiaries of contracts paid for by the subsidies. Get to the bottom of this please...and not by interviewing a Congressman...get to the bottom of it by following the money trail...this is the story that needs to be exposed.
