Middle East Peace Talks Stall Over Settlements

The United States is backing away from peace talks on the Middle East that are in flux, thanks in part to Israel's refusal to back down on the issue of new Jewish settlements. Palestinians are saying that direct talks may be over for the time being, and the U.S., after high hopes for progress, is suffering a tarnished record as a negotiator. Has the cause for peace hit another dead end?

For more on this story we're joined now by Ethan Bronner, Jerusalem bureau chief for our partner The New York Times, as well as Jon Donnison, who is in Ramallah reporting for our partner the BBC.

Anyone, who is not even a serious student of Zionism, knows the concept of eretz Israel, implies occupation of most of the lands from about 100 miles east of the Nile up to the Euphrates! Anyone, who is not even a serious student of Zionism, knows this concept was to be achieved in incremental steps! Anyone, who is not even a serious student of Zionism, knows the means to achieve this rested on the massacres of the indigenous population, as espoused as early as the late 19th century (in London) and continuing up to
Operation Lead Cast and the continuing seige of Gaza! Anyone, who is not even a serious student of Zionism, knows Yitzak Shamir himself stated (after leaing office) that the stategy all along was to drag out negotiations as long as possible, while they continued to build on Palestinian land so as to make it impossible for them to have a homeland! Anyone, who is not even a serious student of Zionism, knows current officials at the highest levels refer to Palestine as Judea and Samaria! The psychology of social conflict in this instance rests ENTIRELY ON CONCEPTION AND POSSESSION. So the inevitable question is, EXACTLY WHAT CAUSE FOR PEACE HAS HIT A DEAD END??? Think maybe charades qualify for this label?
