Rep. Jan Schakowsky Offers Alternative Deficit Plan

Says she'll vote 'No' on the Deficit Commission's co-chairs' plan

Thursday, December 02, 2010

Members of the President's deficit commission are debating how to vote on a controversial plan to reduce the nation's budget deficit. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) says she plans to reject the plan put forward by the commission's co-chairs, Erskine Bowles, former Chief of Staff for President Clinton, and Republican former Senator Alan Simpson. Instead, she's offering an alternative plan which would sharply reduce spending at the Pentagon and raise corporate taxes, targeting windfall profits and excessive executive pay.

Schakowsky says she doesn't see how she can support the co-chairs' plan.

I am tired of the "do-goodies" who want to spread the wealth by taking from some sectors and protecting others. Where are these people on what "entertainers" bring home (sports figures who earn $145 million, just to extend an already overblown salary...actors and actresses who bring in more than equally talented lesser stars) and politicians like Wrangle who get to abuse the common man's lawans make huge financial benefits? If you want to spread the wealth, let's put a common sence approach with equality for all wealth!!

Jan,
You let down your country and your consitutency. You have a responsibility to LEAD and like Obama, you are missing the point that LEADING requires making tough decisions. 8 months of work, and you gamble with your political power to mess with my kids future.

You "don't know how you could support the co-chairs plan" because you don't fully understand your YES vote would move the process to the legislation where it would be open to massive debate and a powerful watering down.

Instead, you felt obligated to obstruct and stall an admittedly imperfect commission suggestion, because it isn't perfect (and thus kicking this can further down the road).

In short, you are not a leader and don't understand the gravity of the situation.

Rep. Shakowski you did the right thing today. You are on the right track with your plan. And I challenge those who criticize you to come up with an alternate plan. If you actually take the time to read the plan that was voted on today, you will be shocked at the how stupid some of the proposed cuts were. And in some cases, the deficit reduction plan was an extermination plan.

I really love your views about Deficit Plan. May God bless you and may god bless your thinking towards middle class.

It is obvious that Jan Schakowsky does not care about the federal deficit just as she doesn't care about the deficit in her own home state. Maybe she should have taken an Economics class in college.

I just heard you being interviewed on NPR re the Deficit Commission, the serious flaws in their approach and your plan, and I want to tell you that you SPOKE FOR ME!!! You reflect my views and speak like a leader of the Democratic Party, while President Obama sounds more and more like a Republican these days. Thank you for doing what you are doing!!!!
