Washington continues to support Israel

Monday, January 05, 2009

This weekend, President Bush weighed in on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Vice-President Dick Cheney also made the rounds of talk shows to express support for Israel. As Israel continues its ground offensive in Gaza, there is increasing speculation that they timed their actions against Hamas to benefit from the last few days of the Bush administration. To explain why, Scott Shane, a reporter in the Washington Bureau of the New York Times joins us.

On Monday's show, John H. asked if there were any precedent for the Israeli situation that President elect Obama is inheriting. He and his guest could not think of any precedent. I believe the situation that Presdient Reagan inherited with Iran in 1980 is the precedent they were searching for on the show. The major difference here is that Iran knew what Ronald Reagan would do if they didn't hand over our hostages. R.R. made it quite clear what his international policies would be and led our nation very well. In the case of B.O., we have an untested, largely inexperienced junior senator who has never made a stern comment regarding any international policies. Neither our allies, nor our enemies know where he stands in this situation. B.O. should take a hint from R.R., open his mouth and let Hamas/Syria/Iran know where he stands.

I was very angered by your insinuation that Israel began it's incursion into Gaza at this particular time just because there is time while President Bush is still in office. You should remember that it was Hamas who refused to renew its agreement not to fire missiles into Israel (which it had never completely honored) and who ended that "ceasefire" by escalating the type and range of missile, now targeting the cities of Be'er Sheva and Ashkelon in addition to the town of Sderot. Those missiles were smuggled into Gaza despite Israel and Egypt's control of the borders. I would just like to direct you to a youtube posting by a young woman living in Israel near the Gaza border: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kroyMfkoRHA.

Do you think Barack Obama will continue the tradition of U.S. involvement and support of Israel?
