A recent spat of severe storms and a daunting heat wave have rolled through the mid-Atlantic region, leaving roughly two million people without power and no hope of getting restored until the end of the week. The North American power grid system has been called the greatest scientific achievement of the 20th century, but is at risk of becoming an antique unless upgrades are made.
