Two cities, both alike in industry: Detroit, U.S.A. and Berlin, Germany. In a recent series for WDET, Martina Guzman explored the similarities and differences between the two iconic hubs of industry that came into their own in the 20th century. 

In her preview of the series, Guzman points out that the cities, which have many similarities regarding art and culture as well, depart most notably in their separate eras of decline. Yes, the disappearance of electrical manufacturing jobs in Berlin, like the disappearance of manufacturing in Detroit, resulted in the loss of thousands of jobs, Guzman says.

But in Berlin, the conversation about whether or not the city could reinvent itself started 20 years ago and continues today as residents grapple with high unemployment and other challenges. Detroit's conversation about whether and how it might again be an American urban hub is just beginning in earnest. Take a listen HERE.
