Assignment: Your Picture or Sound of the Year

Sunday, November 28, 2010 - 06:23 PM

As the year winds down, we invite you to share what stood out most to you in the past 12 months. Take a photo or record audio or video of the person or thing that summed up your year.

It could be bad or good. It could be the big ticket item you bought — or the one you weren't able to buy. It could be an event that changed your life (new baby, wedding). The one event that defined this year for you.

You can send us the photo, audio or video with our iPhone app or if you don't have an iPhone, you can submit the photo right here.

See a slide show of submissions.

After six months of worrying about how I was going finance my college education, I finally got a job as a cameraman at a local television station in Joplin, Mo.

Isaiah is what stands out for me this year. When I found out I was pregnant I had mixed feelings. I knew I would love him, but I wanted to move before I had the baby. In my mothers house there are 8 of us in a two bedroom. I was so worried about this and other things, I ended up going into labor 3 weeks early. When he was born he was 4 lbs 10 oz. He was taken from my hospital room two days after he was born and placed into NICU. Then I learned what real worry was. I just wanted him to be okay and to come home. When he did, a week later, I realized it didn't matter where home was as long as it was full of love. We are still looking for own home but in the meantime I am content and thankful. Thank you Lord.

This is my girlfriend, Allie, and I in Shanghai, China. We were there to celebrate New Year's Eve 2010. Allie and I met in Nanjing, China where we were working as English teachers, or to use the Chinese phrase, "Foreign Experts." We decided to take our first big trip together and spend the holiday in Shanghai. I really wanted to be on a rooftop on The Bund at midnight, and that is exactly where this photo was taken. Thousands of red Chinese lanterns filled the air as an enormous, digital clock on the side of a building struck midnight. I doubt I will ever forget that moment, both for its surreal beauty and the fact that I got to share it with Allie. Allie and I now live together in America. Oklahoma City, Okla., to be specific, and I could not be happier. Allie defines 2010 for me (we just celebrated our first anniversary together) and hopefully many years to come.

My partner Manabu, our dog Bagel and a visit to the southern tip of Conanicut Island at Beavertail State Park in Jamestown, RI this Autumn are the best memories I have of the year 2010. The sun, the surf and the crisp air combined with those I most care about make for the best memory.

After desperately seeking a job for a year during the end of my senior semester of high school, I finally got hired as a camera man at a local television station in Southwest Missouri. Now paying for college will be a little bit less stressful.

I earned a masters degree and got a (part time) job in my field. I feel incredibly lucky and grateful.

My year was marked by the death of my parents. My mother was diagnosed with lung cancer in January and died in March. She was seventy six years old. My father could not bear to live with out her and stop going to dialysis. Three weeks later he died. They were married for 57 years. I am left with so many questions and regrets questions that will never get answered. I miss her more than I ever expected.

My daughter Parker has meant the world to me this year and I can't wait to see what the next year has in hold for us.

Joe Simmons took part in our Picture 2010 Assignment by adding a photo through The Takeaway's iPhone app. He says: "I just got a new job this year. So far it's great. And I get to spend my leisure time doing one of my favorite pastimes. Drawing."

Saying goodbye to the young Thai woman who greeted me every morning for breakfast at Rick's Coffee Shoppe in Bangkok, at the conclusion of my first trip to Thailand, January 2010. In March of 2011 I will relocate to Thailand, a beautiful country of beautiful people.

2010 was the year I retired. On June 30, I left my job of 26 years and on July 2 I took my 89 year old mom on an 8300 mile road trip around the US visiting family and friends. That will be quite a memory:
