It’s Mary again with your weekly look ahead to what the Takeaway is up to this week.
Celeste is out of pocket on Monday, but for the rest of the week, our hosts are reunited in our New York studios again. Thanks to WLRN for hosting us last week! And a special shout-out to WEAA in Baltimore: they’ll begin taking both early hours of the show (from 6-8 AM) this coming week.
On to the show:
MONDAY:
In our weekly Family segment, we’re hoping to have a bit of a debate about “The Economic Consequences of Breast Feeding” on Monday. We were inspired by an article in the WSJ blog “The Juggle” – which posits that “working moms may face stiff penalties for breastfeeding”; and asks whether the economic risk of pumping at work is worth it. Stay tuned.
Last week, we were lucky enough to get an interview with John McPhee, all about his new book, Silk Parachute. We’ll air it here.
TUESDAY:
Every Tuesday, we talk about workplace issues, and Beth Kobliner joins us here most weeks. Turns out, she has been talking to folks around the country along with her 80-year-old father, Harold Kobliner. Today, she’ll give HIS workplace tips. Harold lived through the Depression, and has a lot to say to a younger generation about how to re-prioritize.
The tech conference started last week; the rocking out starts this week: We head to Austin for South by Southwest. SXSW (or “South by” as those TRULY in the know call it) is a great opportunity for us to check in with Jack Grace (AKA the Martini Cowboy). He’s going to perform AND check out the latest bands, and since most of us (sadly) can’t be in Austin this week, he’ll give us his SXSW playlist…
WEDNESDAY:
It’s St. Patrick’s Day, and that means that we’re in search of shamrock shakes! The seasonal McDonald’s beverage was introduced in 1970, and some of us have never stopped looking for a restaurant that might serve us one. We’ll talk about why the shamrock shake was marketing genius and how you can make one at home.
Wednesday kicks off a series of weekly check-ins with Beth Kobliner, where she’ll be telling all of us how to pull off a “Do-it-Yourself Bailout” (because, let’s face it, Congress won’t be helping you re-engineer your 401K anytime soon). Every week, she’ll be giving tips on our website and answering your questions; this week we start by asking what makes us so afraid of facing our money woes, anyway?
THURSDAY:
We talk about the new book, "The History of White People," with author Nell Irvin Painter. She’ll explain how race is far from static and what that means in our new, rapidly evolving, “post-racial” country.
FRIDAY:
Today, The Runaways opens in limited release. Starring Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, it’s the ultimate girl rock band flick. Or is it? We have bids in for Joan Jett and Cherie Currie themselves to come on and talk to us about the best (girl) band movies of all time – and Rafer’s game to chat, too. And if you haven’t thought about what Dakota Fanning’s been up to for a while (maybe since you were watching “Charlotte’s Web” on cable), go blow your mind by watching this video of her and Kristen Stewart singing “Cherry Bomb.”

I'm looking forward to hearing Jack Grace's take on this year's SXSW.
