If you could also list the International Medical Corps (www.imcworldwide.org), I would be most grateful. IMC was first on the ground in Haiti to start providing medical care. It's a non-profit that has been in business for over 20 years, and has a terrific record for providing immediate care, long term care, training so that residents of affected areas can continue medical care, and financial transparency. We are listed on Cidi, CNN, Philanthropy.com, and other credible organizations. Text "Haiti" to 85944 for ten bucks. Or you can go online, or even call at 310-826-7800. I'm just a volunteer and may have left out some necessary info.

While all of the organizations mentioned previously are certainly good, this could be a good way for people to very specifically target their contributions.

Send in the Marines. That's America's response. That's what we're good at. The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson finally showed up after three days. With what? It was dramatically deployed — without any emergency relief supplies. It has sidewinder missiles and 19 helicopters.

But don't worry, the International Search and Rescue Team, fully equipped and self-sufficient for up to seven days in the field, deployed immediately with ten metric tons of tools and equipment, three tons of water, tents, advanced communication equipment and water purifying capability. They're from Iceland.

Hey, I didn't see Halliburton, EXXON, Lockheed Martin, Blackwater, et al. listed in there. Ain't that funny?

I watched a documentary last night on CH 13 about Haiti, poverty and its devastating deforestation. Only 2% of its original forests remains. The site, www.konpay.org, gives a deeper explanation as to how and why this has happened. The US and France really owe Haiti every and all types of relief for what they did to help ruin the country and its economy.

The International Rescue Committee www.theIRC.org is on the ground responding the emergancy. A team has just been dispatched. Please refer to the website to donate.

Partners in Health originated in Haiti and has been there for decades, although it has expanded its efforts against HIV and multi-drug-resistant TB to Peru, Russia, and elsewhere. Tracy Kidder's books "Mountains Beyond Mountains" and "Strength in What Remains" are about this frugal, compassionate, low profile organization. My contribution has gone here.

An additional relief organization providing resources to Haiti is the American Jewish World Service, rated 4 stars on Charity Navigator as well as earning an "A" rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy. www.ajws.org/haitiearthquake

Operation USA is another good group with active programs in Haiti -- that is preparing emergency medical aid now. With the motto, "give and it gets there", OpUSA prides itself on low administrative overhead and getting the appropriate aid where it is most needed.

Does anyone have a sense which of these organizations has the majority of their funding actually going toward the charity as opposed to administrative expenses etc.? I have a recollection of some funny business with red cross a few years back, want to donate, but want to be sure the funds will actually be getting to the people in need.

Catholic Relief Services, one of the largest aid organizations in the US which has been in Haiti for 55 years, should definitely be on your list. www.crs.org
