Rafer Guzman is the film critic for Newsday and a former rock critic for the paper. He was previously a staff writer at The Wall Street Journal. His work has also appeared in Rolling Stone, Blender, The San Francisco Bay Guardian and the late, great Option magazine.

I listened to these bands alongside Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden in the early 90s. Interestingly, that period was a lot less hostile to women rockers, probably, because the industry (and the listening audience) was not mandating that its women all look like blow up dolls. Grunge, ironically, was probably the best thing that could happen for girl power in the music industry...
