In times of rising fuel prices, Americans are shifting from gas guzzlers to smaller cars. How small? The Takeaway went to Scooter Bottega in Brooklyn, N.Y., to investigate.

I lived in Tokyo for the last five years and had a scooter because paying for parking is prohibitive in the city and the scooter can be parked alongside the bicycles there. Now that I have moved back to the NYC area I was considering getting a car but with rising gas prices I got another scooter. It is a great way to get around and I get complimented on it all the time from drivers and pedestrians, "great mileage, eh?" to "smart girl!". And, it is much faster than being in a car as I can easily maneuver around the traffic at stoplights, etc. If you are considering getting a scooter - my advice is go for it!

My father is a used car dealer in Portland, OR, and he can not sell a pickup or an SUV anymore. Because of this, he no longer buys or stock them. In addition, people are looking to buy newer cars that get better mileage. They want to trade in their older cars; however my father notes that everyone else wants to do the same thing so the older cars are not of much value to him.
