Bailout plans and speeches on Capitol Hill

President Bush addressed the nation last night. It was his first prime-time speech devoted exclusively to the economy. It's just one of many political firsts in Washington this September morning. Democratic and Republican lawmakers have been meeting throughout the night to hash out a deal on the $700-billion rescue plan. It's not clear whether the presidential and vice-presidential debates will take place as scheduled, or at all — John McCain is saying he will not show up at tomorrow's presidential debate in Mississippi until there's a bailout plan.

NASA monitors Greenland's Jakobshavn glacier via satellite and is interested in the enhanced mass loss. In August, a team of scientists set out to investigate if water that pools on the glacier’s surface reaches the ocean. NASA Program Manager Seelye Martin explains how a team of 90 yellow rubber ducks were employed in this mission.

Down in the Galapagos, a long extinct sea turtle may be resurrected from the dead. An international team of researchers has found that a living breed of tortoise carries some of the same genes as an extinct type of turtle. Now, scientists are hatching a plan to bring the extinct Darwinian tortoise back to life.
