Middle East Peace Talks Begin in Washington

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today pledged that the United States would be an "active and sustained partner" in peace talks between Israel and Palestinians, as she opened direct negotiations in Washington — the first in 20 months. Yesterday, President Obama met individually with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Obama said he is hopeful that a peace agreement can be reached in the next year, although a State Department spokesperson cautioned, “we’re not going to solve everything on Thursday."
