In the weeks since a young woman was brutally gang-raped and left for dead in streets of New Delhi, India, a global conversation has emerged over gender roles in India, the United States and many other countries.
Much of this conversation has focused on what we teach girls about their own worth; and about the messages that society sends them about their supposed culpability when they are victimized.
But today, we want to explore what we teach our boys, both in India, and here at home.
Akhil Sharma was born in Delhi, India and immigrated to the United States when he was eight years old. Sharma is also a professor of creative writing at Rutgers University and author of "An Obedient Father."

so rape is about the "wrongness of sex outside of marriage". i see,i am in the 21st century, and i do indeed live among crazy people. shoving sex back down,is the problem, not the healthy [consensual] expression of it.
Mothers should teach their sons that they are not any stronger than a girl in thought word or deed. Teach them how to respect every woman whether it is their teacher, housekeeper, bartender and grandmother irrespective of class, caste or colour. While doing this have your husband, father... OLD DOGS learn this new way of life. THEN, rape wouldnt even be a thought. Only the Rape seed, an actual plant would survive
SLIGHT BIAS? He's kidding. Easy to call it a slight bias when you're on the said that's favored by this "slight".
It's not just India, it is a Oriental problem, subcontinental in modern times. Here's why http://anupdgn.blogspot.in/2013/01/everyday-is-rape-and-more.html
It's not just India, China. Look at the recent behavior in Steubenville. This behavior is despicable and until MEN are held accountable and until we shame them for this behavior, it will continue. How is it that half the community in Ohio is angered that the (alleged) rapists have been arrested? The whole community needs to be outraged. Maybe we need more women in authority.
Whu r u guys pussyfooting around about this topic on this broadcast?? The reason rape is so prevalant in India and other countries is because of DISRESPECT for females, viewing females as objects to own. It's not just teaching empathy, it is simple respect and treating others as you would like to be treated. It is NOT culture, it is OPRESSION.
I'm with BubbaK59 - there is nothing "slight" about the bias whatsoever.
A slight bias??? Are you kidding me?
Mr. Hockenberry, you are my hero. You are a great interviewer who doesn't let the guest get away with BS and bamboozling. I look forward to your program every morning.
We should teach boys that sex outside of marriage is a bad idea and not appropriate. At the same time, I understand that rape is not a crime of sex, but one of violence.
