Six Word Memoirs of Love and Loss

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

As Valentine's Day approaches, we've been collecting your memoirs of love and heartbreak — all in six words.

"After 20 years, still the one" says one listener from Rhode Island. Elizabeth in Denton, Texas had a darker story: "Wonderful love — then alcoholism took him." Stephanie in West Palm Beach's had a story that sounds like the start of a sitcom: "Funny, intelligent. Infatuation. Straight, gay." And Constance in Salt Lake City, Utah's story is: "Husband flees but still calls daily."

Many of the stories coming in are too intriguing to leave at six words. Listener Rees Shad from Carmel, New York ("Distinct possibility this is a dream") explains why he keeps waiting to wake up.

Two six word stories:
You cheated. I took your stuff.

Gay bar meeting. True love found.

The last is the story of my current relationship. We met in the only gay bar in the not-terribly-small city in which we found ourselves. I hung out with amateur theatre folks, he had a lesbian roommate. Thus it was that two straight folks found love, at the gay bar.
Needless to say, a number of our gay friends were less than thrilled that it was us - not them!
