Brutal Rape in India Prompts Protests and Reflection

There are tragedies that sometimes are so brutal in nature that they cause societies to look inward and re-evaluate their values. India is going through its a period of self-reflection after a 23-year-old female student was brutally gang raped two weeks ago. Veena Venugopal, a contributing writer to Quartz based in New Delhi and author of "Would you Like Some Bread With The Book" says that although Indian women are starting to coming forward to report rape more often, the police force is still apathetic.

Year in Review: Sandra Fluke's Unexpected Political Stardom

In January 2012, as she imagined the year ahead, Sandra Fluke, then a third year law student at Georgetown, assumed her role in the 2012 campaign would be similar to that of most Americans. "At the beginning of the year, I imagined my influence was going to be my one vote and potentially volunteering for some candidates," she explains. "But it turned out to be somewhat larger than that." Fluke reflects on 2012, and discusses her goals for the year ahead.
