More Republicans Express Support for Taxes on Rich

Tuesday, December 11, 2012

The chorus of Republicans supporting tax increases on the rich is getting louder, with Republican Senator Bob Corker from Tennessee recently jumping on board, along with Republican Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma.

What's notable about those these men? Politically, they have little to lose. Corker just won his re-election campaign and won't be running again until 2018. Coburn will be leaving the Senate in 2016.

Instead, the political pressure is falling on the shoulders of John Boehner, the House Speaker who is feeling the heat from within his own party.

The issue isn't so much taxes on the rich, which don't add up to that much anyway, but matching spending cuts, since it's the spending that causing the deficit to balloon out of control.
