Syrian rebels killed four of the Syrian government’s senior military officials on July 18, and, over the next four days, stormed the city of Aleppo.

New Yorker staff writer Jon Lee Anderson entered the city soon after the rebels captured it and has been reporting from Aleppo. In recent New Yorker articles, he describes a country torn by civil war without clear factions. The campaign by President Bashar al-Assad against the rebels has been going on for 17 months, with some estimates placing the death toll at around 20,000.
