Musician and poet K'Naan recently returned to his native Somalia, which is in the grip of a devastating famine and violent civil war. His last memories of the country were twenty years ago, when he fled with other members of his family for safety in Canada.
K'Naan talks about his recent return to Somalia, his hopes and expectations before he went back and the reality he witnessed when he travelled throughout the country. He wrote an op-ed about his journey for Sunday's New York Times.

Dear K'naan.
I had always been a fan of you and you are such iconic person for many Somalis who are wishing to be a star like you. Somalia will be so proud of U as you showed the world how much U care. Keep on you gud will and hopefully Allah will bless it for U. Let ur motive be high bcoz U stand 4 a country and one of the very memories of U that flashes back in my mind .. is the momment that you held high the SOMALI FLAG at world cup stage .....
