Food Banks Can't Keep Up With Demand

Wednesday, November 23, 2011

It's the day before Thanksgiving and many of us will be spending the day preparing for our holiday feast. But for millions of Americans the tables may be more bare this year. With the economy still weak, and federal and state budgets for charity services cut, many local food banks and food pantries are seeing an increase in demand. But they don't have enough food on their shelves to keep up.

Mary Insprucker, northwest regional director for Catholic Charities, and Rebekah McGee, program director for emergency assistance of Action in Community Through Service, give their accounts of the struggles they are witnessing at their food banks.

I am thankful for the OWS movement and its growth and that continues to be a peaceful protest. I am thankful for the the video technology that allows mistreatment of unarmed individuals by police and security personnel to be shown widely. These are factors in a broader awakening in America of how we have become less a democracy and an actual corprocacy. Truth is something to treasure and be grateful for even if it is hard to accommodate.

I'm a product of corporate downsizing..laid off 3 years ago, went back to school & received my bachelors this summer. I was just hired for full time work 3 weeks ago! I'm thankful to have a steady paycheck, my family, & health!

I'm thankful that I'll be with the friends I lived with 20 years ago in Norwalk, CT, a time when I started the book that is finally out: Self Love as Spiritual Practice, and that this book is making a difference in people's lives. A wonderful feeling.

In response to the story about the woman who got a turkey for Thanksgiving from a food bank? food pantry?: the comment was that she was so happy she could provide for her family without relying on someone else.

She DID rely on someone else.

When did that become a sin?

Repeating the question that was raised by the film 'Bowling for Columbine':

What is the ethos of rugged individualism doing to us?
