It sounds like quite an unlikely collaboration — rock legend Lou Reed making a record backed the massively successful heavy metal group Metallica. Their new concept album, "Lulu," is out today in North America, and has left some music fans a bit bemused. A recent review in The Washington Post called it a "multi-headed hydra of unpleasantness." Ben Sisario, music journalist and reporter for The New York Times, met with "Loutallica" recently, and has a more nuanced view of the new record.

There's Lulu-Kool Aid floating around out there, and Ben Sisario seems to have dunked his head in a small vat. Thanks for being real about your reactions to this...project...although partway through, I realized I'd rather listen to John spend 3 min. 51 sec. reviewing this year's Annual Clown Directory (out of Great Britain), and another 3:51 of Celeste reviewing a New York Phil. classical concert--or even vice versa--than hear ANY airtime covering Mou-Lallica.

It sounds forced. Even the concept sounds forced. They're moving at two different speeds like a rollerskater holding on to the back of a speeding muscle car. Lou Reed and Danny Elfman is a better combo. I think Reed agreed just to get out of the apartment. It must've been Metallica's idea. They've always been promotion heavy and business oriented. Like the noise they made fighting Napster. It's just another way to sell records - which still sounds like their 1991 "black" album. Lars, you so crazy!
