Tucson Update: Still Grappling With the Aftermath

Tuesday, January 11, 2011

Yesterday a mostly quiet 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner appeared in court and was charged with attempted assassination, murder, attempted murder, and other federal crimes. Meanwhile the community of Tucson, Ariz., continued to grapple with the aftermath in the media limelight. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D—Ariz.) remains in critical condition; her husband released a statement asking for the concerned to consider donating to The Red Cross. What debates and questions are unfolding in the place where the shooting occurred?

We turn again to Christopher “Buzz” Conover, a reporter at KUAZ Public Radio in Tucson, for the latest news from Tucson.

"I'm wondering if we're kinda playing the numbers here because does a reduction in gun crime mean a reduction in the number of crimes or in the number of people killed. We can say that there's a reduction in the number of crimes but for each crime if you were still killing 20 people versus one person in 20 crimes, it's a little bit off setting. So, thanks. Have a great morning."
