It is interesting that I joined the Peace Corps right at the time that you state that the "Me" Generation" led to the lowest numbers of volunteers. I was a volunteer from 1980-1982 in what was then called Zaire. Like many volunteers, it transformed my life. I doubt that my teaching biology and chemistry in a high school really did much for the local population. Instead, I feel that it opened my mind to a much richer experience. As a consequence, I chose to get a MHS in International Health and a PhD in International Nutrition while working summers in developing areas of the world and continued to work on nutrition programs in developing areas of the world until the birth of our son. In this economic downturn, I feel that I am still reaping the benefits of Peace Corps in that I feel completely comfortable not owning lots of "things" like a car, a big wide screen TV, or a home. I can appreciate the fact that our small rental apartment is located between two beautiful parks and that I actually have a refrigerator and gas stove. More importantly, we are all in good health and enjoying life.
