Israeli Commandos Storm Pro-Palestinian Activist Ship, At Least 10 Killed

Monday, May 31, 2010

Israeli commandos stormed a flotilla of ships carrying hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists, many from Turkey, who were trying to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza strip. However, there have been conflicting reports as to what exactly happened. Israelis say their commandos were attacked when the activists snatched a gun from one of their soldiers and opened fire. The organizers say the Israeli troops began to fire the moment their feet hit the deck.

There has been widespread international condemnation of the Israeli action and UN secretary Ban Ki Moon has called for a full investigation, while Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas described the incident as a "massacre."  The BBC's Wyre Davies reports from Israeli port of Ashdod waiting for the ships to arrive.

One crime at a time, Israel is seeing a self-fulling prophecy come to fruition: it's destruction but not at the hands of those Israel claims are its enemies and want wiped out but at its own hands. They're self-destructing faster than it's big daddy, the US, is.

First, Apartheid, then genocide, then war crimes, now piracy (well, not really now, but this is the first time the world takes notice). I wonder if they realize that with every atrocity they commit, they become more and more like the Nazis.

Boycott, divest & sanction Israel!

First we had the Richard Goldstone report commissioned by the United Nations that confirmed that Israel committed "War Crimes" in Gaza. Now we have another unnecessary war crime committed by the State of Israel against a humanitarian group carrying food supplies and water to Gazans who are starving under an Israeli blockade. It is a shame against humanity that the Gazans have to drag jugs of water from Egypt in long underground tunnels to survive, and it is a shame for Baraq Obama to just
express "concern" for the Israeli killing of 16 humanitarian support activists who tried to provide Gazans water - rather than condemn it outright. Middle East is boiling with anger today over that incident.

There is no doubt that the Israeli action is a crime against humanity, and it would certainly fuel more anti-Semitism around the globe, as there is no doubt that the U.S. is giving Israel a pass, and that will also cause a rise in the already high anti-U.S. sentiment everywhere.

In his recent visit to Iran, Brazilian president Ignacio Luis Da Silva said that "Iran is not the evil" as it is portrayed by the U.S. The Gaza incident would certainly help the world see "who is the evil" in the Middle East today. And the headlines about Gaza across the world today tell the whole story. Nikos Retsos, retired professor
