Today, the widely anticipated John Cusack/Rob Corddry vehicle, "Hot Tub Time Machine" hits theatres nationwide. As the title suggests, the film centers on a hot tub that transports its characters through time, back to the more innocent year of 1986.
Rafer Guzman, Takeaway movie contributor and Newsday writer talks about the most memorable time travel movies, and why audiences find these tales so compelling.
And Dr. Michio Kaku, a theoretical physicist and author of Physics of the Impossible, explains which of Rafer’s favorite movies depict time travel in the most realistic way.

This is why the Doctor (Doctor Who) never goes "back" to change time. He only gets involved in problems that happen while he's "visiting a period". His warning to all non-Timelords is that if one attempts to correct one's own past the universe will implode. It's a lie, of course, but he finds it effective in avoiding paradoxes... and meddling teenagers.

In every case they all go back to save themselves. Any meddling in the past will ripple and change the current present in subtle or drastic ways. Especially when you consider how coincidence is so tightly woven into all the shifting time strings. That's maybe why we're only allowed to change the future. Try it ! It's fun !

I like how the British do time travel. Dr Who with the TARDIS pushed the limits on occasions. But Red Dwarf really messes up stuff in a number of episodes. "Tikka to Ride" for example of Red Dwarf and Dr Who's episode "Blink" are some of my favs.
1. The protagonists go back in time, several times, to save themselves from failing their history final exam and being split up.
2. The protagonists go back in time to save Earth from an alien vessel by providing it with the song of the humpback whale.
3. The protagonist goes back in time to save his own life from terrorists, but must save his parents' marriage (threatened due to his own meddling) and saves his mentor's life in the process.
