Michael Furlong, a Defense Department official, set up a network of private contractors in Afghanistan and Pakistan to help track and kill suspected militants. Mark Mazetti, who broke The New York Times, said Furlong used around 20 million dollars to hire private contractors to do intelligence gathering around Afghanistan and Pakistan.
This is a spy novelist's dream. So we turned to one. Frederick Forsyth is the author of such acclaimed books as, "The Day of the Jackal," "The Odessa File," "and "The Dogs of War."
He says that Michael Furlong took a book out of John Gotti's mafia wars, and that he has never seen anything like this - a government official hiring private contractors to assassinate.

Harry Goebbels, who are you really? Where do you work? What do you do for a living? Are you in the military? I googled your name, but nothing came back. There was some stuff on Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi propaganda minister. Any kin to him? My name is Shane Furlong. I live in Knoxville, TN. I am Mike Furlong's brother. I have known Mike Furlong for 52 years. I am also retired from the Army. How well do you know him? What are your credentials? You are very reckless with allegations. That bit about stealing government money will be proven to be a lie in a few days. Are you ready for a defamation lawsuit in court? You are obviously very ignorant to the ways of the world and Army contracting. Where to start, so much garbage and so little time. You have put quite a bit of trust in the New York Times, their single source journalism style, anonymous faceless nameless sources, and in 2 America bashers. You seem to be a big fan of the CIA with their multibillion dollar budget and their beauracratic level of productivity. DOD will have to make a judgment call in a few weeks. It will be subjective, but Force Protection is a legitimate function of DOD. Mike Furlong has served this country since graduating from High School. He served in every war since Vietnam in some capacity. He is an airborne master blaster, a ranger; he is a legend at Ft Irwin for his track record at the National Training Center. He has served at West Point and represented the USA stellarly at Sandhurst. The man is a genius. I wish I had a dollar for every time in the Army some Major or Colonel came up to me and said, are you Mike Furlong's brother? I used to work for him and I just want to say one thing, your brother is a genius and a great man. I have never met anyone like him. And, don't be mislead by these stories that talk about some lowly bureaucrat going off the reservation. Mike Furlong is a 2 star equivalent for protocol. He has been advising at the very highest levels for years. You are right about one thing, Mike is very limited in what he can say at this point. Knowing him, there are many things he will never say if they will hurt his country, patriotic leaders, and soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. You don't know about his visits to maimed soldiers in San Antonio and how much they are on his mind as he does his job. Or the New York Fire Dept hat he wears whenever he is with family. Mike Furlong is my hero. I love the man and it tears me up to hear pukes like you say what you say, because you obviously don't know him. Yes, Mike Furlong has been in the psyop business. He was in the psyop business almost 20 years ago. The problem with the world that he moves in, you don't have the luxury of laying out everything you do for the Main Stream media or the mental midgets that buy into it so easily. So, Harry keep reading your NYT, keep idolizing people like Robert Pelton and Eason Jordan, and keep drinking the Grape Kool-aid.
Mike Furlong wouldn't be in the psyops business would he? :))
Don't worry, Furlong and/or his friends will keep posting these fictions while he is under gag order and locked out of his office in order to stir the pot and invent blame.
It's a great story about a man on the verge of retirement looking to create a fat little company using a contract never meant for them.
When two major publications reference a leaked memo from the CIA and DoD has already put him under criminal investigation (as in "stealing money") You pretty much get the picture. If Pelton and Jordan were going to burn you they have the media on speed dial. But that would have happened last year when you were feeling your oats and decided that all that money was not being watched and they had to be removed because they were the only people that knew your game.
It was the Agency that finally caught you according to the Washington Post and the DoD piled on according to CNN. It also seems that this great patriot also destroyed the entire information program by ignoring the commands of his superiors and hiring Dewey and other cold war charlatans.
From what the insiders say he took a desperately needed project ordered by McKiernan from two well known providers of information (remember CNN and Gulf War One).
Then when they had a change of command, Furlong hijacked it to create a bogus company and hire discredited Reagan-era hacks to play spy. Then that $26M vanished into a "black program" even though it was an open source non classified program. So millions spent, nothing of value accomplished, programs destroyed, more money spent investigating and convicting Furlong and less confidence by Americans in their government and more suspicion by Afghans of well intentioned Americans in Afghanistan. Good work Micheal. Hide behind the flag and patriotism all you want but you destroyed two years of work by your superiors.
Google Furlong and you will discover that he crashed other programs in the Balkans and Iraq and wasted millions of taxpayer dollars.
Maybe Furlong thought he was that guy in Office Space who walks off the the bucks while everyone is busy squabbling? But in the real world Furlong got caught by his bosses and now the "Furlong Apparatus" is moving to a federal prison and thankfully his coworkers can focus on their work and not trying to stop Furlong. Finally they succeeded. Yes Michael patriotic Americans and members of the serving military turned you in.
So keep psyoping and making stuff up Michael. You had a long run of dodging the bullet.
Here is a real mafia wars story for you, Fred. The American military is down to like 1 year on an 18 month deadline to start pulling out of Afghanistan. What if a secret deal has already been cut. In exchange for a peaceful Afghanistan after the Americans leave (Power sharing and opium revenue sharing. No attempts to assasinate Karzai), The CIA has agreed to give the military lousy or no intel. It has also agreed to protect key Taliban and Al Queda leaders. It will do as much as possible to mitigate any military intelligence operations that are a threat to key Taliban leadership.
Fred, It is quite a sensational story, isn't it? Unfortunately, it is not true. I know its hard to believe but the NYT let a story go out without corroborating its source or even trying to contact the person whose life it might ruin. Incidentally, Mazzetti of the times sent Mike an email today requesting an interview. After several stories since his have come out making his story look amateurish, he would now like a chance to be fair and balanced. So, who were his sources for his hit piece that has now gone viral, Eason Jordan and Robert Young Pelton. Despite their claims, these 2 gentleman were never far enough inside the Furlong aparatus to be make any legitimate accusations (but close enough for the fertile, slanderous and sensational mind of Pelton). Their contract proposal was rejected by Furlong when neither could qualify for the necessary security clearances and it was discovered that the bulk of their past work in Iraq was plagiarized. There exists an email from Pelton to Furlong threatening to "blow up" his operation if he was not paid. He was never reimbursed more than a few $100,000 in start up costs. He was expecting a payday in the millions of dollars. So, just who are these 2 star witnesses for the NYT? Canadian Robert Young Pelton has made a career of embedding himself with organizations like Blackwater and the US Army, then upon leaving them trashing the hell out of them and distorting thier image. He has left a wake of people who never want to see him again. Who is Eason Jordan? Eason Jordan was fired by CNN (not the most conservative network around) for falsely accusing the US Army of killing journalists. One reason, he could not get a security clearance was that he had spent to much time hanging out with the likes of Kim Jung-Il and Fidel Castro. Nevertheless, I do agree with Fred, the concept of Jason Bournes running around Afghanistan killing off the terrorists or capturing Bin Laden would make a great book. I just hope that whoever does write it at least likes America a little bit. It would be nice if patriotic Americans can get a fair shake in fiction even if they can't get it from the NYT.
