What Have We Learned in Iraq?

Friday, July 23, 2010

As the draw down of American troops continues in Iraq, we're starting a conversation about the progress so far. After seven years, what have we learned from being at war there?

Old Quote from somewhere in the South

The more things change,
The more they are the same.
I served in Vietnam in '71-'72, during the draw down so Nixon could get re-elected.
My son-in-law is about to finish his tour in Afghanistan after a tour in Iraq.
It appears that the USA has not done any successful nation building since the "greatest generation" took care of Europe, Japan, Taiwan, and Korea. We don't have what it takes for nation building, but can still kick butt. So we should just go in, knock whoever the bad guy is, out of power, and get ourselves out. Next bad guy gets the same. Good guy shows up, we'll talk.
