The Challenges for Undocumented Students Seeking Higher Education

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

A new AP-Univision poll says more than eight out of ten Latinos in America believe the most important goal for high school graduates is to continue their educations.  94 percent of the more than 1,500 Latinos polled said they expect their children to go to college.

The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act would help make this expectation a reality for thousands of undocumented Hispanic people living in the U.S.  The DREAM Act, first proposed in 2001, is back on the table; if passed, it will allow illegal immigrants to receive citizenship if they entered the U.S. before the age of 16, have been here for at last five years, and attend college or join the military for at least two years.  Not surprisingly, there is fierce opposition to the DREAM Act by many who say the legislation rewards illegal activity.

Will Suarez, a temporary U.S. resident from Mexico, is about to start classes at the University of Kansas, and says the DREAM Act would benefit many hardworking students like himself.  Fernando Pizarro, a Washington correspondent for Univision, also joins the conversation to explain the facts surrounding the controversial legislation, which could be voted on as early as the fall.
