Questions Surround BP's Involvement in Release of Pan Am Flight 103 Bomber

BP has been under fire since April for its responsibility in the Gulf of Mexico's disastrous oil gusher. Ironically, the same week the oil is finally contained, BP faces more trouble — this time involving the release of the so-called Lockerbie bomber, Abdel Basset al-Megrahi.

Al-Megrahi, was convicted of killing 270 people in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 above Scotland in 1988 and was sentenced to serve a minimum of 27 years in prison. He was released early last year after doctors said he only had a few months to live. Reports in the British press say that the 58-year-old's release was connected to lobbying by BP, who may have thought his release would help the company secure a big drilling contract off of Libya's coast.
