New York Yankees owner, George Steinbrenner, passed away yesterday morning at the age of 80. He helmed the Yankee ship for 37-plus years, winning seven World Series Championships. Steinbrenner spent a lot of money on the team in order to win and changed the relationship between teams and their owners. The Takeaway's sports contributor, Ibrahim Abdul-Matin examines Steinbrenner's legacy.

I think it was unfortunate at the end of your segment on George Steinbrenner that you left the impression the turn around of the Bronx was due to the NY Yankees and his ownership.
The turn around in the Bronx and neighborhoods in NYC was a result of the hard work of countless residents, small businesses lead by local community groups and substantial investment by the City of New York starting with the Koch Administration. The Guiliani and Bloomberg administration have asissted the Yankees and the Steinbrenner's further increase their asset by giving away public park land and hundreds of millions of dollars in subsidies to build the new Yankee stadium.
Mr. Steinbrenner was an astute businessman who made lots of money from the Yankees. That is it. Please do not elevate him (and discredit the real work done by others) by crediting him with any larger civic benefit beyond improving the value of his business - the NY Yankees.
