Top of the Hour: Waiting on Unemployment Benefits, Morning Headlines

Tuesday, July 06, 2010

Congress is on its Fourth of July recess this week, leaving more than a million Americans waiting for them to return to vote on a bill to extend unemployment benefits. Michelle Ives depends on unemployment, but received her last check last month. That, and this morning's headlines.

I'm confused. The papers report that congress has already authorized 99 weeks of unemployment and yet the people you interviewed seem to have been cut off after 52+/ weeks. I know that a lot os the state funds are broke. Isthat the problem? The states can't /won't pay their share?
In NY, the fund is broke and they have been borrowing from some federal fund to pay benefits.
Please get us some facts and not just more polemics. I'm tied of the "politics" from all sides. Please perform your public duty and not just play politics.
Thanks
