The Fate of Climate Change Legislation

Tuesday, July 06, 2010

Harry Reid and his staff are desperately trying to figure out how to get the 60 votes needed to pass a climate bill in the Senate, which President Obama promised on his campaign trail. According to The Takeaway's Washington correspondent, Todd Zwillich, it's looking highly unlikley right now that the Democrats will get those 60 votes.

Some parts of the bill, like raising the liability cap on BP or cracking down on the regulation of offshore drilling will most likely pass along with other measures, like promoting the sale of electric cars and energy efficient appliances. However, the challenge will be finding an agreement on cap and trade in order to reduce carbon emmissions. This will be debated when Congress returns next week.
