Monday, February 08, 2010

Toyota's popular hybrid, the Prius, may be the next car to face a worldwide recall, according to news reports. The move comes at a perilous time for the embattled automaker, which is accused of responding too slowly to safety concerns.

Micheline Maynard covers the auto industry for our partner the New York Times. She is also the author of "The Selling of the American Economy: How Foreign Companies are Remaking the American Dream." You're right to take Toyota to task on the company's lack of oversight. And it may even be true that executives there chose to keep this problem with the brakes quiet. However, when your host asks leading questions like: 'Don't you have a sense that the company knows more than it's letting on' (I'm paraphrasing from the broadcast), you're straying toward the kind of offensive, sensationalistic journalism that typifies programs on FOX. We expect more substance and adherence to professional standards on NPR.
