Imagining WikiLeaks' Political Drama as Literal Drama

Wednesday, December 08, 2010

The tale of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks that has transpired in recent months, and especially the events of the past couple of weeks, has played out like a dramatic thriller. It now seems somewhat inevitable that someone will eventually portray Assange and WikiLeaks, literally, using political theater. How might a dramatic retelling of these already-dramatic events work out?

Jim Fitzmorris, a playwright and professor of theater history and literature at Tulane University, believes it would be a terrific play.  "Assange is almost the perfect character for this role," he said.

Ummm...Hockenberry DID make the comparison to The Pentagon Papers -- YESTERDAY. And an interesting insight at that: The NY TImes got off on a technicality. In fact, The Takeaway's coverage has explored the ramifications for journalists and for international diplomacy; put things in historical context; examined how hackers are responding; included a variety of voices. And in fact, many, MANY people are talking about the fascinating dramatic elements of this story -- which is part of what makes it so compelling. Is it wrong for the Takeaway to acknowledge and explore that most of us are talking not only about the broad geo-political, moral and philosophical implications of wikileaks, but also about who is going to play Assange in the movie? Compared to other news outlets, I'm GLAD The Takeaway doesn't take itself so seriously that it ignores basic human interest in the drama of a morality tale/ drama for our era.

'Story plots for the television series based on Julian Assange drama!' Oh, please! Here is the reason I usually change the station when The Takeaway comes on our local public radio station. For Christ Sake, what world do you live in? The CONTENT of the wikileaks and the fact that the US global empire is being challenged, the legalities of whether he should be held without bail on charges of sexual misconduct, the legalities of freezing his assets without any charges yet made against him, and you choose to provide us the non-news garbage that pops up in John Hockenberry's brain while he's taking a shower in the morning?!!!! Who gives a @#$&^&**(! about what story lines can emerge for a tv series. You are painting a picture of Assange basically without any facts yourself, completely from heresay and posing that as a news hour. YOu are not helping the situation one bit, unless it is for the forces that are moving us closer to fascism daily. Have you done ONE comparison to Ellsbergs Pentagon Papers? Do you take yourselves seriously as a news program?
